From the Siwa Oasis in the west to Dakhla, Kharga and Farafra in the Western Desert, these oases represent population centers that grew up around scarce water resources, and were able to build thriving agricultural and cultural systems amidst enormous natural challenges.

Life in oases depends on the presence of groundwater springs, which are the primary source of irrigation and drinking water. Oases are characterized by a terraced agricultural system, where date palms are planted in the upper layer to provide shade, fruit trees such as olives and pomegranates are grown below, and vegetables are planted at the very bottom. This system helps to reduce evaporation and conserve soil moisture.

However, these oases now face a number of challenges, such as declining groundwater levels due to unregulated drilling, and increased water consumption for agriculture and urban expansion. Climate change is also affecting water salinity, threatening the sustainability of these resources.

In addition to their environmental importance, oases are of high cultural value, as local traditions and customs are still alive, rare handicrafts are practiced, and these areas also contain archaeological and historical sites dating back to the Pharaonic, Roman and Islamic eras.

Preserving oases requires an integrated development vision that balances optimal resource utilization with maintaining environmental and cultural balance, while integrating local communities into decision-making.
